Hong Kong Easter 9’s- The Inside Story

Two and a half hours waiting for the kit at the airport, four hours “team building” in Lang Kwai Fong and ten minutes eating a super-burger did nothing to dent tournament debutants Beijing Hockey Club’s enthusiasm and first opponents Elite were duly dispatched 2-0 thanks to two goals by team captain Peter Kwan. Despite a 0-3 reality check at the hands of KCC, the third and highly anticipated match against Samurai ended in an honourable 2-2 draw thanks to an Anita Calabro goal and some stick to face intimidation tactics by the captain. The previous night’s activities appeared to take their toll after lunch when a 0-0 draw against inferior team Fantasma was followed by a 2-0 loss in a dead rubber with Elite.

Valley Black snuck through 2-0 with an unstoppable deflected goal in the first bowl match on Saturday morning but spirits remained high and goals from Anita and Jack in the final game against The Usual Suspects led to a 3-0 victory and a berth in the semis.  Sadly BHC’s run ended in the pouring rain  with a 1-0 defeat by eventual Bowl winners YC&AC from Yokohama.

Congratulations to fellow mainlanders Shanghai HC for showing us up and making it to the Cup semi finals.
A big thanks to Peter for all the organization, and to HKFC for putting on a fantastic tournament. We shall return.
