Practice matches for the next 2 weekends

As this weekend is officially a working weekend (29-30 Sept), and the weekend after (6-7 Oct) is part of the National Day holiday, we are trying to determine if the sessions will still go ahead depending on how many will attend the session on each weekend. Please email Cristian at seguraarasa@hotmail.com by this Friday if you are definitely interested in playing either weekend. Final details will be posted closer to the session.

Otherwise, have a fun and safe Golden week holiday and hope to see you all soon!

    SATURDAY, September 15th, 2007

Practice Match Session - Saturday, September 15

As with last week, the session will start at 1pm at the indoor pitch (see ‘Contacts and Location’ for more details). Next week we should hopefully be back at the outdoor pitch!

We are again meeting at 11:45am in front of the St Regis Hotel, 21 Jianguomenwai Dajie (opposite TGI Friday and next to Sizzler) to share spare car seats and taxis, if needed. It is suggested that you meet here if you haven’t been to the stadium before to avoid getting lost, because it isn’t that easy to find!

Please bring or buy water before heading to the venue as there is nowhere to purchase water once there and it can get very hot inside.

Again, all welcome & hope to see you there! Check the noticeboard in case of changes closer to the weekend!

Round up of last session (September 8)

Awesome turn out last week and good to see most people with their own sticks and balls now! To avoid confusion, as many of them look the same, please put your name on your equipment with a permanent marker before the next session!

A few things to remember after a couple of incidents last week:

    (1) Please let Peter know if you decide to wander from the group so we don’t leave you behind

    (2) If you’ve never been to the indoor stadium before, best to meet at our meeting spot to avoid getting lost

    (3) Make sure you check that you have all your belongings before leaving as the stadiums are not exactly central, and taxi rides back and forth will add up!

Otherwise, if anyone has any photos to contribute to the website, please send them to bjhockeyclub@hotmail.com

    SATURDAY, September 8th, 2007

Practice Match Session - this Saturday, September 8!

This Saturday's session will start at 1pm. As the normal field is out of bounds for two weeks, this week's session will take place at the indoor astroturf pitch in a school at Da xing huang cun lu cheng ti yu xun lian ji di (大兴黄村芦城体育训练基地 ). See the Contacts and Location section for more details.

For those who would like to share taxis, we are meeting at 11:45am in front of the St Regis Hotel, 21 Jianguomenwai Dajie (opposite TGI Friday and next to Sizzler). Bring water or you can purchase some at the 7-11 across the road. Again, all friends, beginners and experts alike are welcome!

Hockey Sticks for Sale at the Stadium!: Tom from the hockey shop is bringing down a range of sticks, new and used, for people to purchase at the session. He is even willing to return to his store if he sells out or if you want a different type or weight, so there should be no issues with sticks this week and you should come on down!

Hope to see you all there! Open-mouthed

    General FAQs

What if I don’t have any equipment?

See the section ‘Hockey Equipment’ for details on where you can get some gear.

There are usually a couple of extra sticks lying around that you may be able to borrow for your first session, but if you plan to return after the first session, we do suggest that you purchase your own stick.

How do i choose a hockey stick that's best for me?

As a beginner it can be hard to choose the best stick for you but this link may help. Even after reading this, you might find that all sticks feel pretty much the same. The best thing to do is pick up the stick, test it for how comfortable the weight and height feel for you and decide how much you are willing to spend because as we play for fun, it probably won't make too much of a difference!

As an added note, our uniforms will be red and yellow, so you may want to keep this in mind in case you are colour & fashion concious... ;-)

Do I need to buy protection equipment e.g. shin pads, mouth guard etc.?

Players choose to play at their own risk. We do suggest that participants wear shin pads and mouth guards for their own safety, but this is a personal choice and therefore, the decision is up to you. The Beijing Hockey Club will not be held responsible for any injuries sustained during sessions.

As a general observation, players do take care to protect each other, and we do not promote violence or angry behaviour in the team, but accidents can happen at anytime, and prevention is always recommended for ease of mind.

Do I need to buy a uniform?

Currently we are working on getting a uniform designed for the team. Until then, for game sessions on Saturdays, we have bought bibs to distinguish between teams so you can wear whatever colours you'd like!

Will I be at a disadvantage if I have never played hockey before?

Obviously 10 years of experience are better than none, but this club is more about having fun than being an expert player! Come down and try it out and members are usually more than happy to pass on a few tricks and skills!

    Can I bring a friend?

Of course! All are welcome at the club, as long as they’re willing to have a go!

    Equipment

The following are a couple of places at which you can get some decent equipment for sessions. (Note that none of these dealers are associated with the Beijing Hockey Club in anyway (but if you dropped in, it never hurts for them to know that we're providing them with a bit of business!):

For sticks, balls and everything else hockey, check out the shop listed in the attached image. Don't be fooled by the strange location in an apartment block, as the shop is actually quite professional on the inside! If you've found a door with a hockey picture on the front, you know you're in the right place. But be sure to try to bargain!!

They are usually open until 6pm and NOT usually open on weekends but they can be flexible with being open or staying open until a time that is more convenient for you, so give them a call before you head over. Contact details are in the attachment and Chinese language skills are a must!

There is also Decathlon. They don't sell sticks, but they do sell soccer shin pads and socks which are cheaper than the ones you can get at the place mentioned above!
    Address:
Beijing Chaoyang District, 195 East 4th ring road (near Nanmofang Lu) 100022

    Telephone: (86 10) 8777 8788

    Uniforms

We currently have a number of designs that we are considering and getting quotes on. Until then, please bring a white top to game sessions on Saturdays so we can distinguish ourselves from the opposition. Shorts, skirts, socks and all other elements of clothing can be any colours you like! For Wednesday training sessions, there is no dress code.

    Social Activities General

After our Saturday sessions, members of the Beijing Hockey Club usually meets later in the night for after-game drinks. Further social activities will be planned in the future. Watch our noticeboard for details of upcoming events!

    Location Map

    Regular Pitch

The outdoor hockey pitch we regularly play on is an astroturf water-based pitch, similar to what you'd see professionals playing on.

It's located on the north 4th ring road (Beisihuan Zhonglu), just opposite the Continental Grand Hotel (北京安定门外北四环路北辰东路8).

The name of the stadium is 奥体中心北门 (ao ti zhong xin bei men). Once youre at the front gate, turn left & walk for a bit and it's on your left.

From Guloudajie subway station, get into a taxi and head north on Gulouwai Dajie and turn right on Beisihuan Zhonglu and you should see a boom gate entrance on your right.

    Indoor astroturf pitch

This pitch will sometimes be used if we are unable to access the regular pitch. It is located at a school at Da xing huang cun lu cheng ti yu xun lian ji di (大兴黄村芦城体育训练基地) on a turn off from Bei kai gao su gong lu (京开高速公路) which is south west outside the 5th ring road, but straight down a highway and easy to get to.

If you get lost, get the taxi driver to call 6123 9591.
